WBJEE Exam 2026: West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Marks, Questions pattern and Negative Marking

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination 2026: West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination is an OMR-based test. The WBJEE exam is conducted in two papers: the first paper is exclusively on Mathematics, and the second paper covers Physics and Chemistry together.

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) is conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB).

Exam Type: The examination consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ).

Total Marks: The total marks for the examination are 200 Marks.

Papers: The exam is divided into two papers:

   Paper I: Mathematics

    Paper II: Physics and Chemistry

Marks Consideration for Admission

The scores from these papers are used differently depending on the course a candidate is applying for:

Engineering and Architecture Admission: Marks from both Paper I and Paper II are considered.

Pharmacy Admission: Only Paper II (Physics and Chemistry) is considered for the Pharmacy Merit Rank.

WBJEE Mark Distribution Method

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination is conducted for a total of 200 marks. Out of this, 100 marks are allocated only for the Mathematics subject, and a total of 100 marks are allocated for the two subjects, Physics and Chemistry. The question paper for each subject is divided into three categories: Category I, II, & III. The marks allocated to questions and the negative marking rules are different for each category.

1. Category I

Mark Value Per Question: 1 Mark

Negative Marking: ¼ (one-fourth) mark will be deducted. This means if 4 questions are answered incorrectly, 1 mark will be cut.

2. Category II

Mark Value Per Question: 2 Marks

Negative Marking: ½ (half) mark will be deducted. This means if 2 questions are answered incorrectly, 1 mark will be cut.

3. Category III

Mark Value Per Question: 2 Marks

Negative Marking: There is No Negative Marking

WBJEE Subject-wise Exam Pattern & Marks Distribution

Let's now look at the subject-wise question structure for the three subjects covered in Paper I and Paper II of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

First, Paper I - Mathematics is conducted, and on the same day, after an hour-long break, the second paper, Paper II - Physics and Chemistry, is conducted at the same centre and on the same seat.

A. Mathematics (Paper I)

Total Questions: 75

Total Marks: 100

Category I (1 Mark): 50 questions (50 × 1 = 50 marks)

Category II (2 Marks): 15 questions (15 × 2 = 30 marks)

Category III (2 Marks): 10 questions (10 × 2 = 20 marks)

B. Physics (Part of Paper II)

Total Questions: 40

Total Marks: 50

Category I (1 Mark): 30 questions (30 × 1 = 30 marks)

Category II (2 Marks): 5 questions (5 × 2 = 10 marks)

Category I (1 Mark): 10 questions (10 × 1 = 10 marks)

(Note: This total is based on the assumption of 40 questions/50 marks for Physics)

C. Chemistry (Part of Paper II)

Total Questions: 40

Total Marks: 50

Category I (1 Mark): 30 questions (30 ×1 = 30 marks)

Category II (2 Marks): 5 questions (5 × 2 = 10 marks)

Category I (1 Mark): 10 questions (10 × 1 = 10 marks)

(Note: This total is based on the assumption of 40 questions/50 marks for Chemistry)

Admission to Engineering/Architecture: In this case, admission is based on the GMR (General Merit Rank), which is calculated by combining the marks of all three subjects. This means both papers are important.

Admission to Pharmacy: Students who wish to enroll in B. Pharm (BPharm) only need to perform well in Paper II, as the marks from Mathematics are not added. Their admission is based on a separate PMR (Pharmacy Merit Rank).
